Menahga is a town of about 1,340 in Wadena County, named for the Ojibwe word for the blueberries that still grow along the river north of town. It has water on three sides and a serious recreation season, and not much of the covered, oversized storage that season generates demand for.
Spirit Lake is right in town — 114 acres, 45 feet deep, with a city-owned public access on the northeast shore off 1st Street and a fishing pier at Memorial Forest Park. Blueberry Lake is three miles northeast at 533 acres. Upper and Lower Twin sit on the Shell River with a state launch on the connecting channel. Add the Crow Wing and Shell River paddling water east of town and there is a lot of gear looking for a home in October.

Summer riding centers on Huntersville State Forest, east of town in Wadena County — mostly an off-highway-motorcycle destination, with 58-odd miles of OHM trail alongside a shorter Class I and II ATV route, plus campgrounds at Huntersville Landing and Shell City Landing. Huntersville is classified a Limited forest, so riding stays on signed roads and trails.
The Heartland State Trail does not reach Menahga — its western trailhead is Heartland County Park in Park Rapids, a quarter mile north on Mill Street off Highway 34. That is a short haul from a unit you are already storing at.
